LEGO Technic 42128 Heavy-Duty Tow Truck with Crane

Overview

Open up the world of engineering with the LEGO Technic 42128 Heavy-Duty Tow Truck with Crane. This set honors the look and feel of a real tow truck, featuring authentic details such as the grille, air filters, lights, and exhaust pipe, all refreshed with a bold color scheme. Beyond aesthetics, the model is a playground of movement, offering pneumatic and mechanical functions that capture the essence of heavy machinery while remaining approachable for builders.

Opening the hood reveals a 6-cylinder inline engine with moving pistons, providing a tangible glimpse of how engine components translate into action. Steering is intuitive: turn the pin on the roof to guide the truck through imagined service calls. The crane and boom operate via a pneumatic system, enabling an extending lifting boom, an extending crane boom, and a functioning winch. Notably, for the first time in LEGO Technic history, this set introduces a lifting axle that pulls down extra wheels, adding a new layer of realism when handling uneven loads.

Size matters in a good way: the model stands over 8.5 inches tall with the crane down, about 23 inches long with the boom down, and roughly 5.5 inches wide when the outriggers are up. With 2017 pieces, the build invites careful assembly and a satisfying reveal of moving parts, gears, and mechanisms that echo real-world equipment.

Key features

• Pneumatic functions drive multiple working parts, including lifting and extending booms and crane motion
• The lifting axle mirrors real heavy-duty practice by pulling down extra wheels for uneven loads
• Rotating crane, working winch, and extendable outriggers add authentic operating detail
• Steering is controlled by a roof pin and the hood opens to reveal a moving 6-cylinder engine
• Authentic design cues like grille, air filters, lights, and exhaust pipe amplify realism
• Designed for ages 11+, this set offers a rich building and combining experience for families and hobbyists

As you build, you’ll discover a thoughtful blend of engineering play and storytelling potential. The kit encourages exploration of moving parts, balance, and coordination, while delivering the tactile joy of precise LEGO Technic construction. The experience favors curiosity and experimentation rather than promises of specific outcomes, inviting you to see what you can create when mechanics come to life.

What you get and how it helps you learn

• 2017 pieces provide a substantial, rewarding build that deepens concentration and planning
• Realistic engine and steering introduce practical insights into mechanical systems
