KiwiCo Levitating Lantern – STEM Physics Kit for Kids 9+ | Build & Learn

A hands-on physics project that sparks curiosity

Meet the KiwiCo Levitating Lantern, a wooden lantern that appears to hover in midair. The kit invites young builders to open the box, wire the lantern, assemble the base, and place the stand to observe the levitation. As the model hovers, tilts, and settles, tactile exploration turns a clever illusion into a vivid learning moment—proof that science can be seen, touched, and tested.

What makes it work: real-world science you can see

The project centers on tension and tensegrity, showing how forces, geometry, and structure combine to create stable lift. By tilting and nudging the lantern, kids notice how small adjustments affect balance and motion, transforming abstract ideas into concrete feedback from the model.

• Hands-on exploration of physics through a visible, interactive illusion.
• Observe cause-and-effect as the lantern responds to movement and position.

Build it yourself: from unboxing to hovering

The kit guides you through unboxing the wooden lantern, wiring the light, and assembling the base. Then you place the stand and experiment with positioning to trigger the levitation. Troubleshooting becomes part of the discovery journey.

• Develops fine motor skills and a hands-on mindset.
• Encourages systematic testing, iteration, and problem-solving.

Educational value and family-friendly fun

Beyond the wow factor, the lantern project supports deeper learning about mechanisms, design, and experimentation. It offers a memorable STEM experience that grows with inquisitive minds, not a single novelty trick.

With more than a decade of experience, KiwiCo delivers kid-focused kits designed to inspire exploration. The company has shipped millions of products worldwide, reflecting a commitment to safe, engaging, and imaginative learning experiences for families.
